A Washington CMO is doubling its manufacturing capacity, less than 5 years into its existence
Just three years into its existence, Selkirk Pharma has started the expansion of its 145,000-square-foot fill-finish facility in Spokane, WA. The CMO will nearly double its capacity, something it said was critical in a June 1 press release.
“Selkirk was founded two years prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic with the intent to build a much-needed pharmaceutical manufacturing capacity on US soil,” CEO Patrick Haffey said in a statement. “Seeing 3 years of work come together in the construction of this building is an important milestone for our biopharmaceutical clients and their patients.”
The facility will have isolator-based filing systems and electronic batch records, good for a total investment of $90 million. It’s expected to be up and running by Q2 2022.
Selkirk currently has 25 employees and has plans to increase to 45 by the time the plant is up and running. When it’s fully operational, the plant will employ 300 staff members. An additional $60 million is expected to be invested into the facility in the next three to five years as plans are drawn up to build a second facility on an adjacent plant. Details for that project, which will be on an 8-acre plot of land in Spokane, will be released later.
The startup raised $9 million in angel funding in March 2020, right at the start of the Covid-19 pandemic that both helped propel its business and caused uncertainty for the development of the new site, the Spokane Journal reported. Haffey himself is a Spokane-area native, and the Gonzaga University alumnus spent three years in South Korea working as the senior manager of global business development for Samsung Biologics before c0-founding Selkirk.
While right now, Covid-19 vaccines are a focus, Haffey told Spokane’s local CBS affiliate that the company is prepared to help out in Alzheimer’s research and cancer research.
Selkirk is one of several biotech companies in the growing Spokane region — as CDMO Jubilant HollisterStier and Massachusetts-based Ameresco both have locations nearby.
