Biden ex­ec­u­tive or­der lifts ban on us­ing march-in rights to low­er drug costs

As part of an ex­ec­u­tive or­der is­sued last Fri­day mar­ket­ed as pro­mot­ing eco­nom­ic com­pe­ti­tion, Pres­i­dent Joe Biden di­rect­ed the gov­ern­ment to pause a pro­posed rule from the Trump ad­min­is­tra­tion that would have pre­vent­ed the use of so-called “march-in rights,” which have nev­er been used be­fore but hy­po­thet­i­cal­ly could low­er pre­scrip­tion drug costs.

For­mer Pres­i­dent Don­ald Trump in­tro­duced the po­ten­tial ban as part of a swath of reg­u­la­to­ry agen­da items en­act­ed ear­li­er this year as he pre­pared to leave of­fice. Biden had left the pro­pos­al in place un­til Fri­day, mark­ing a re­ver­sal from just last month when the White House out­lined its own reg­u­la­to­ry plans and in­clud­ed the Trump rule.
