Ned Sharpless steps down as head of the National Cancer Institute

After almost five years at the top of the National Cancer Institute, Ned Sharpless on Monday decided to call it quits. The decision comes at a crucial moment for the Biden administration as it scrambles to shore up its scientific chops.

Sharpless, who will continue as NCI director through April 29 and be replaced on an acting basis by NCI principal deputy director Douglas Lowy, followed his work at a top cancer research center at the University of North Carolina.
