Covid-19 roundup: Gavi rais­es $4.8B in pledged funds; Japan can­cels or­der of 40M re­main­ing As­traZeneca shots

Now rough­ly two years in­to the Co­v­ax ini­tia­tive, the glob­al vac­cine al­liance group Gavi has been try­ing to raise new mon­ey — and now has re­ceived pledges of $4.8 bil­lion in fund­ing.

The promised in­vest­ment was an­nounced on Fri­day. Gavi said in a state­ment that $1.7 bil­lion came from new “sov­er­eign donor pledges,” $2.1 bil­lion from fi­nan­cial mech­a­nisms pro­vid­ed by the Eu­ro­pean In­vest­ment Bank (EIB) and the US De­vel­op­ment Fi­nance Cor­po­ra­tion, and an ad­di­tion­al $1 bil­lion from the World Bank, Asian De­vel­op­ment Bank and EIB.
