In the spring of 2021, demand for Covid-19 at-home tests plummeted, and Abbott Laboratories was forced to discard components that were approaching expiration date. Now, manufacturers tell Time that demand is so high, the test makers are struggling to keep up with demand.
iHealth received a $1.3 billion federal contract for 250 million tests, and was forced to scale its goal up to 10 million tests a day last month, up from 1 million a day in November. It still is aiming to double production by the end of this month, but is struggling to keep up.
