GSK manufacturing workers vote to strike over pay dispute as Walmsley promises company growth
GlaxoSmithKline is facing the very real possibility of a strike — and the timing couldn’t be worse for CEO Emma Walmsley, as she promises a new era of growth amid pressure from activists.
Members of Unite, a union that represents around 700 of GlaxoSmithKline’s UK-based manufacturing workers, voted 86% in favor of going on strike after the pharma offered what workers called “a derisory” pay raise. While the company offered 2.75% over last year’s pay, the union argued the true rate of inflation is up 9% over last year, according to a Wednesday announcement.
