In a win for strug­gling na­tion­s' vac­cine sup­ply, first African-pro­duced dos­es of J&J shot hit arms

As Africa tries to play catch-up and vac­ci­nate its peo­ple in time to pre­vent an­oth­er Covid-19 wave, the first do­mes­ti­cal­ly man­u­fac­tured vac­cines will be avail­able for pa­tients soon as the drug sub­stance from Eu­rope has been sent to a South African man­u­fac­tur­er’s flag­ship site.

The first in­gre­di­ents for batch­es of J&J’s Covid-19 vac­cine man­u­fac­tured in South Africa were re­leased ear­li­er this week, man­u­fac­tur­er As­pen Phar­ma­ceu­ti­cals said in a re­lease. The jabs will be dis­trib­uted through­out South Africa, and made avail­able to the African Vac­cine Ac­qui­si­tion Task Team/African Union plat­form.
