In a win for struggling nations' vaccine supply, first African-produced doses of J&J shot hit arms
As Africa tries to play catch-up and vaccinate its people in time to prevent another Covid-19 wave, the first domestically manufactured vaccines will be available for patients soon as the drug substance from Europe has been sent to a South African manufacturer’s flagship site.
The first ingredients for batches of J&J’s Covid-19 vaccine manufactured in South Africa were released earlier this week, manufacturer Aspen Pharmaceuticals said in a release. The jabs will be distributed throughout South Africa, and made available to the African Vaccine Acquisition Task Team/African Union platform.
