Nonhuman primate shortage worsens due to pandemic, importation challenges — study

A National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine committee is encouraging “decisive action” to address a long-running national shortage of research primates.

In 2021, National Primate Research Centers failed to meet roughly two-thirds of investigator requests for research-naïve macaques for NIH-sponsored research, according to a recently published report. The analysis follows a 2018 study by the NIH’s Office of Research Infrastructure Programs that identified a monkey shortage, and the problem has only worsened on the heels of the Covid-19 pandemic and a Chinese ban on the export of research primates, according to the committee.
