Er­i­ca Tay­lor is a “diehard sci­en­tist” at heart.

She’s got a bach­e­lor’s in bio­chem­istry and a PhD in im­munol­o­gy from Stan­ford’s school of med­i­cine. How­ev­er, she was halfway through her grad­u­ate pro­gram when she re­al­ized she didn’t want to fol­low the tra­di­tion­al route.

“I wasn’t that in­ter­est­ed in pur­su­ing a busi­ness de­gree. But I had the un­der­stand­ing at that time that even in an aca­d­e­m­ic set­ting … if it’s not fund­ed, it’s not go­ing to hap­pen,” she said.
