Roche's Chugai to set up new $1B+ lab in Yoko­hama, con­sol­i­dat­ing R&D

Japan’s Chugai, a Roche com­pa­ny, is con­sol­i­dat­ing its re­search heft in an en­vi­ron­men­tal-friend­ly fa­cil­i­ty in Yoko­hama, a city south of Tokyo, which will cost more than $1 bil­lion to con­struct.

Con­struc­tion of the 35,210-me­ter square lab, called the Chugai Life Sci­ence Park Yoko­hama, will cost 127.3 bil­lion Japan­ese Yen (about $1.15 bil­lion) and be­gin this Au­gust. Two of the com­pa­ny’s oth­er fa­cil­i­ties — Fu­ji Gotem­ba Re­search Lab­o­ra­to­ries and Ka­maku­ra Re­search Lab­o­ra­to­ries that fo­cus on an­ti­body tech­nol­o­gy and drug dis­cov­ery — will be closed and their op­er­a­tions will be in­fused in­to the new lab.
