In vic­to­ry for mi­cro­bio­me com­pa­ny, FDA ap­proves pills pu­ri­fied from poop

Seres Ther­a­peu­tics has of­fi­cial­ly tak­en the poop out of poop pills. On Wednes­day, the Cam­bridge-based biotech com­pa­ny scored an FDA ap­proval for its first drug, which is based on bac­te­r­i­al spores pu­ri­fied from hu­man stool.

The ther­a­py will be mar­ket­ed un­der the brand name Vow­st. It’s de­signed to help re­store healthy gut mi­crobes in pa­tients re­cov­er­ing from re­peat­ing in­fec­tions of Clostrid­ioides dif­fi­cile, com­mon­ly called C. diff, which can cause col­i­tis, di­ar­rhea, and some­times death.
