3M to make $146M in­vest­ment in­to pro­duc­ing bio­phar­ma tech­nol­o­gy

3M, the man­u­fac­tur­er known for mak­ing of­fice sup­plies and tape, is adding to its biotech man­u­fac­tur­ing ca­pa­bil­i­ties with a $146 mil­lion in­vest­ment.

The Min­neso­ta-based man­u­fac­tur­er an­nounced this week that it plans to boost its ca­pa­bil­i­ties to sup­port biotech man­u­fac­tur­ing. Specif­i­cal­ly, 3M will de­vel­op and even­tu­al­ly man­u­fac­ture fil­tra­tion equip­ment to be used in bio­pro­cess­ing and in bi­o­log­i­cal and small mol­e­cule man­u­fac­tur­ing. The new in­vest­ment will go to­ward mak­ing ma­te­ri­als that can fil­ter out im­pu­ri­ties in the drug man­u­fac­tur­ing process, the com­pa­ny said.
