As patent debate swirls, BioNTech CEO promises not to enforce Covid vaccine IP rights in Africa — report

As the World Health Organization warns that Africa would need to ramp up Covid vaccination rates by six-fold to achieve mid-year goals, BioNTech has reportedly promised not to enforce intellectual property rights on the continent — putting it at the center of the industry’s heated patent debate.

“Our goal is not to keep others from using our technology. Our goal is rather to actively see to it that our technology is available on all continents as safely and as widely as possible,” CEO Uğur Şahin told Reuters. The company was not available for comment as of press time.
