AstraZeneca pays out $425M to settle litigation over Prilosec and Nexium but admits no wrongdoing

AstraZeneca has agreed to pay out $425 million to settle thousands of combined lawsuits filed against the company over acid reflux medicine Nexium and heartburn drug Prilosec, the company said Tuesday.

The agreements “effectively resolve” the cases that were pending in several courts: the US District Court for the District of New Jersey, the Delaware Superior Court and the New Jersey Superior Court. The lawsuits alleged that AstraZeneca did not do enough to warn patients and doctors about the risk of contracting chronic kidney disease and other related issues from long-term use of the prescription-only medicines, and that the companies concealed the risks of the medications.
