Cer­tain dis­card­ed drugs will soon cost phar­ma com­pa­nies

Mil­lions of dol­lars worth of in­jectable and in­fusible drugs go to waste each year, as they typ­i­cal­ly come in sin­gle-dose vials and dos­ing varies de­pend­ing on the pa­tient. Start­ing next year, though, those un­used dos­es will cost phar­ma com­pa­nies.

Ac­cord­ing to an in­fra­struc­ture bill passed last year, drug man­u­fac­tur­ers must re­fund Medicare for un­used drugs in sin­gle-dose vials be­gin­ning in 2023. Medicare al­so in­clud­ed the up­date in its lat­est pro­posed rule, ac­cord­ing to STAT, which first re­port­ed the news.
