Eu­rope faces a ma­jor new over­haul of its 20-year-old phar­ma leg­is­la­tion

When Stel­la Kyr­i­akides, Eu­ro­pean Com­mis­sion­er for Health and Food Safe­ty, re­ferred to the Bea­t­les song The Long and Wind­ing Road at a press con­fer­ence this morn­ing, she was re­flect­ing on the gar­gan­tu­an task that the com­mis­sion has just un­der­tak­en to re-write its two-decade-old phar­ma leg­is­la­tion.

The draft re­forms, un­veiled to­day, fea­ture new perks for the in­dus­try but al­so stricter reg­u­la­to­ry da­ta pro­tec­tion lim­its for com­pa­nies that don’t in­tro­duce new drugs across all mem­ber states.
