Feng Zhang's CRISPR start­up Aera shrinks head­count by a quar­ter

Ge­net­ic med­i­cine start­up Aera Ther­a­peu­tics, which emerged last Feb­ru­ary with $193 mil­lion, has laid off 25% of its staff, a spokesper­son con­firmed to End­points News Thurs­day af­ter­noon.

The Boston start­up is built on work out of CRISPR pi­o­neer Feng Zhang and the Uni­ver­si­ty of Utah’s Ja­son Shep­herd, and it had reeled in some of the biggest biotech ven­ture back­ers like ARCH and GV.

The lay­offs come the same day an­oth­er Zhang start­up was pub­licly launched with $57 mil­lion for epi­ge­net­ic biotech Moon­walk Bio­sciences.
