Gavi announces $1.8B for vaccine access, pandemic preparedness efforts in Africa

The global health partnership Gavi is looking to ramp up vaccine access in Africa through a slate of programs that puts up $1.8 billion to bolster vaccine manufacturing, strengthen pandemic preparedness and provide routine vaccinations to children.

During a two-day meeting hosted by the Ghanaian government, Gavi’s board approved the establishment of a finance mechanism — dubbed the African Vaccine Manufacturing Accelerator — which will make a total of up to $1 billion available to support vaccine manufacturing efforts. The organization said the decision follows 18 months of “close collaboration” with the African Union and Africa CDC.
