Gene ther­a­pies — ap­proved and in de­vel­op­ment — of­fer the po­ten­tial for cures. These an­ti­dotes don’t come cheap though, and the NIH and the Bill and Melin­da Gates Foun­da­tion are open­ing their cof­fers in a bid to de­vel­op “af­ford­able” ge­net­ic treat­ments for glob­al use.
