House committee holds hearing to identify root causes of recent drug shortages
A lawmaker described the economics of generic drug manufacturing as “unappealing” to manufacturers and said that may be one reason for the drug shortage crisis in the US during a House hearing on Thursday.
Drug shortages increased by almost 30% between 2021 and 2022, with the ASHP recording 247 active shortages, according to Chairman Rep. Morgan Griffith’s (R-VA) remarks during the Energy and Commerce Committee’s Oversight and Investigations Subcommittee hearing.
