NIH con­tributes bil­lions to new drug de­vel­op­ment. GAO says patents don't tell the full sto­ry

The Na­tion­al In­sti­tutes of Health, which con­tin­ues to wait for Pres­i­dent Biden’s nom­i­na­tion of its next leader, spends hun­dreds of bil­lions on re­search that trans­lates in­to bio­med­ical break­throughs and new drug ap­provals. But the ex­act ex­tent to which NIH con­tributes to drug de­vel­op­ment is still “dif­fi­cult to mea­sure and not well un­der­stood,” a new Gov­ern­ment Ac­count­abil­i­ty Of­fice re­port re­leased Thurs­day found.
