Il­lu­mi­na re­ceives EU or­der to di­vest Grail

The Eu­ro­pean Com­mis­sion on Thurs­day an­nounced that it will send Il­lu­mi­na an or­der to di­vest Grail, mark­ing the next phase in an an­titrust case that has weighed on the ge­nomics be­he­moth.

Af­ter Eu­ro­pean reg­u­la­tors blocked the $7.1 bil­lion deal a year ago, the di­vest­ment or­der was all but in­evitable. Il­lu­mi­na has sig­naled that it will ap­peal.

“With to­day’s de­ci­sion, the Com­mis­sion has adopt­ed restora­tive mea­sures re­quir­ing Il­lu­mi­na to di­vest GRAIL and re­store the sit­u­a­tion pre­vail­ing be­fore the com­ple­tion of the ac­qui­si­tion,” reads a press re­lease.
