Mod­er­na halts African fa­cil­i­ty build as Covid-19 vac­cine de­mand plum­mets

Mod­er­na’s man­u­fac­tur­ing fu­ture in Africa is less clear af­ter the com­pa­ny held back plans to build an mR­NA vac­cine pro­duc­tion site in Kenya.

“Mod­er­na has not re­ceived any vac­cine or­ders for Africa since 2022 and has faced the can­cel­la­tion of pre­vi­ous or­ders, re­sult­ing in more than $1 bil­lion in loss­es and write-downs,” a spokesper­son told End­points News. With the con­struc­tion pause, the com­pa­ny will re­view what fu­ture de­mand for mR­NA vac­cines will be like in Africa, the spokesper­son added.
