More than two dozen De­moc­rats in­tro­duce bill to ex­tend CMS drug price ne­go­ti­a­tions far­ther

Sens. Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Pe­ter Welch (D-VT), Dick Durbin (D-IL), Eliz­a­beth War­ren (D-MA) and 21 oth­er De­mo­c­rat col­leagues in­tro­duced leg­is­la­tion yes­ter­day that would shift the goal posts on when the Cen­ters for Medicare and Med­ic­aid Ser­vices can be­gin ne­go­ti­a­tions.

The al­ready-es­tab­lished gov­ern­ment ne­go­ti­a­tions be­gin­ning at 13 years for bi­o­log­ics and nine years for small mol­e­cule drugs would fall to just five years post-FDA ap­proval un­der the bill, rapid­ly in­creas­ing the over­all amount by which Medicare can save and rapid­ly in­creas­ing the risk­i­ness of bio­phar­ma com­pa­nies’ prof­its.
