Ex­plo­sion re­port­ed at Se­qens API man­u­fac­tur­ing plant in Mass­a­chu­setts, caus­ing one death

A work­er has died af­ter an ex­plo­sion at Se­qens’ ac­tive phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal in­gre­di­ent man­u­fac­tur­ing fa­cil­i­ty in New­bury­port, MA, on Thurs­day.

The ex­plo­sion in New­bury­port, around 35 miles north of Boston, was re­port­ed at 12:45 a.m. EST on Thurs­day, ac­cord­ing to the New­bury­port Fire De­part­ment.

Five work­ers were in­side the build­ing at the time of the ex­plo­sion. Four were tak­en to a lo­cal hos­pi­tal and even­tu­al­ly re­leased, and one work­er was ini­tial­ly re­port­ed miss­ing. The body of the miss­ing work­er was re­cov­ered at around 5:30 p.m. on Thurs­day. There was ma­jor struc­tur­al dam­age to the build­ing that pre­vent­ed fire­fight­ers and res­cue crews from en­ter­ing to be­gin a search.
