Outgoing regulatory chief details hiring and retention challenges for FDA inspectors

The hiring of new FDA inspectors continues to be a challenging task as the agency is losing inspectors more quickly than it’s able to bring on new hires, said Judy McMeekin, associate commissioner for regulatory affairs in the FDA’s Office of Regulatory Affairs (ORA), who’s retiring in June.

Speaking at a webinar hosted by the Alliance for a Stronger FDA, McMeekin said the “challenges” in hiring and retaining staff are impacting the ORA’s ability to conduct inspections. She said most of the agency’s foreign inspections are being conducted by US-based investigators who are traveling to the foreign sites three times per week.
