Play­ground rais­es $410M fund, Ar­tis clos­es $200M as bi­ol­o­gy and tech VC con­ver­gence con­tin­ues

Two Bay Area ven­ture cap­i­tal firms that in­vest in biotech star­tups — but al­so put their mon­ey be­hind a broad­er swath of nascent com­pa­nies in bi­ol­o­gy, tech and ad­ja­cent fields — said Thurs­day morn­ing that they’d raised new funds.

Pa­lo Al­to-based Play­ground Glob­al brought in a $410 mil­lion third fund and Ar­tis Ven­tures closed a $200 mil­lion fund dubbed Tech­Bio II. The rais­es came in about $90 mil­lion and $100 mil­lion be­low orig­i­nal tar­gets, re­spec­tive­ly, as out­lined in SEC fil­ings.
