Pushed out of Eli Lil­ly in ethics scan­dal, Josh Smi­ley lands a top job at Zai Lab

A year af­ter Josh Smi­ley’s scan­dalous ex­it from Eli Lil­ly, the for­mer CFO has land­ed a new C-suite role.

Zai Lab has ap­point­ed him as chief op­er­at­ing of­fi­cer, re­port­ing di­rect­ly to founder and CEO Saman­tha Du and over­see­ing all as­pects of busi­ness, fi­nance and glob­al op­er­a­tions.

Smi­ley re­signed from Lil­ly’s top fi­nan­cial post af­ter the phar­ma gi­ant di­vulged an in­ter­nal in­ves­ti­ga­tion that found Smi­ley had sent “con­sen­su­al but in­ap­pro­pri­ate per­son­al com­mu­ni­ca­tions” to mul­ti­ple team mem­bers — al­though it did not spec­i­fy the na­ture of the in­ap­pro­pri­ate re­la­tion­ships.
