Regeneron chairman Roy Vagelos will retire, and Len Schleifer and George Yancopoulos will co-lead the board

Roy Vagelos, the former Merck CEO who has chaired Regeneron’s board for almost three decades, will retire. Leonard Schleifer and George Yancopoulos, the company’s founders and top executives, will become co-chairmen.

Vagelos, 93, has chaired Regeneron’s board since 1995, the year after he left the CEO and chairman role at Merck, which he led for a decade. At the time, the biotechnology industry was still in its relative infancy — the first monoclonal antibody approved for use was less than a decade old.
