Sen­ate con­firms Mon­i­ca Bertag­nol­li to lead NIH with bi­par­ti­san 62-36 vote

Mon­i­ca Bertag­nol­li passed through the fi­nal step to be­come Pres­i­dent Biden’s first Sen­ate-con­firmed NIH di­rec­tor in near­ly two years with a 62-36 vote on Tues­day.

Bertag­nol­li, who cur­rent­ly heads the NIH’s Na­tion­al Can­cer In­sti­tute, faced pres­sure from Sen­ate Health Com­mit­tee Chair Bernie Sanders, who vot­ed against her con­fir­ma­tion over con­cerns that she’s not pre­pared to take on phar­ma’s “greed.”
