Supreme Court takes on Pur­due Phar­ma bank­rupt­cy case

The Supreme Court will re­view a case chal­leng­ing Pur­due Phar­ma’s bank­rupt­cy plan, tem­porar­i­ly stay­ing a $6 bil­lion deal that would pro­tect the Sack­ler fam­i­ly from civ­il suits re­lat­ed to the opi­oid epi­dem­ic.

Pur­due filed for bank­rupt­cy in 2019 as law­suits piled up al­leg­ing de­cep­tive mar­ket­ing of its high­ly ad­dic­tive painkiller Oxy­con­tin. The opi­oid epi­dem­ic claimed more than 564,000 lives be­tween 1999 and 2020.
