For the past two decades, Michael Dowl­ing has been CEO of New York’s largest health sys­tem, North­well Health. And for years, he’s held a be­lief that health sys­tems could be the ones to dis­rupt health­care.

Dur­ing his tenure, Dowl­ing has shift­ed North­well’s rev­enue out­side the four walls of the hos­pi­tal. The sys­tem has 21 hos­pi­tals and 890 oth­er sites of care like doc­tor’s of­fices and ur­gent care cen­ters, and on­ly 45% of its rev­enue is de­rived from hos­pi­tal-based busi­ness, Dowl­ing said.
