Covid-19 roundup: FDA gives OK to use extra doses in Pfizer/BioNTech vaccine vials; Sinopharm's Peru trial to resume
While Pfizer and the US government are still negotiating for more doses of its BioNTech-partnered mRNA vaccine, the FDA has cleared the way for pharmacists to squeeze more doses out of the current supply.
Pharmacists discovered the extra doses soon after the vaccination campaign began on Tuesday following an emergency use authorization over the weekend. While the EUA label states that each vial contains 5 doses of the vaccine — each coming at 0.3 mL and requiring dilution — they realized that there’s often enough left for another full dose, or even two.
