Gates Foundation, Mastercard, Wellcome launch coronavirus treatment accelerator as outbreak deepens
A month after announcing it was prepared to spend $100 million on R&D efforts against the novel coronavirus — and with the outbreak showing no signs of waning — the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation revealed where much of that money would be spent.
The foundation, Wellcome and Mastercard launched the Covid-19 Therapeutics Accelerator today. With $50 million each from Gates and Wellcome and $25 million from Mastercard, the accelerator will support pharmaceutical companies, biotechs and academic researchers hunting for antivirals that can treat the novel coronavirus that has now claimed over 4,000 lives worldwide.
