Gates Foun­da­tion, Mas­ter­card, Well­come launch coro­n­avirus treat­ment ac­cel­er­a­tor as out­break deep­ens

A month af­ter an­nounc­ing it was pre­pared to spend $100 mil­lion on R&D ef­forts against the nov­el coro­n­avirus — and with the out­break show­ing no signs of wan­ing — the Bill and Melin­da Gates Foun­da­tion re­vealed where much of that mon­ey would be spent.

The foun­da­tion, Well­come and Mas­ter­card launched the Covid-19 Ther­a­peu­tics Ac­cel­er­a­tor to­day. With $50 mil­lion each from Gates and Well­come and $25 mil­lion from Mas­ter­card, the ac­cel­er­a­tor will sup­port phar­ma­ceu­ti­cal com­pa­nies, biotechs and aca­d­e­m­ic re­searchers hunt­ing for an­tivi­rals that can treat the nov­el coro­n­avirus that has now claimed over 4,000 lives world­wide.
