Sen­ate health com­mit­tee ad­vances pan­dem­ic pre­pared­ness reau­tho­riza­tion bill

The Sen­ate Health, Ed­u­ca­tion, La­bor and Pen­sions com­mit­tee on Thurs­day ad­vanced its ver­sion of the reau­tho­riza­tion of a ma­jor pan­dem­ic pre­pared­ness bill, with drug short­age help in­clud­ed, just a day af­ter a House com­mit­tee ad­vanced its own ver­sion with­out those add-ons.

Fea­tured in the Sen­ate’s reau­tho­riza­tion of the Pan­dem­ic and All-Haz­ards Pre­pared­ness Act (PAH­PA) are tweaks to bet­ter help the gov­ern­ment nav­i­gate fu­ture pan­demics, par­tic­u­lar­ly when it comes to the de­vel­op­ment and ac­qui­si­tion of tests and treat­ments. Al­so in­clud­ed: sev­er­al new re­port­ing re­quire­ments to help al­le­vi­ate drug short­ages, just as the US faces short­ages of com­mon can­cer drugs, as well as new au­thor­i­ty for FDA to look more close­ly in­to the sup­ply chain and API sources.
