The first attempt at animal-to-human organ transplantation in decades ended in tragedy Tuesday, as the patient who received the transplant passed away, just two months after the procedure.

The University of Maryland Medical Center said Wednesday that David Bennett, the 57-year-old who received an emergency heart transplant from a genetically modified pig in January, “began deteriorating several days ago.”
